Slice of America: Charred in the Florida Sun – DVD Review
Filmmaker Gorman Bechard heads down to Sunny South Florida to discover if real New Haven pizza aka “apizza” (pronounced: ah-beetz) can be found in the Southern United States. Right before the global pandemic of 2020, Jimmy Fantin took a gamble on his lifelong dream of opening his own pizza shop and did it in the small coastal town of Stuart, Florida. This took his wife by surprise, but she supported her husband’s vision of bringing a slice of Connecticut to his new home.
Jimmy shop might be quite tiny, but he soon built a huge reputation after a rave review from One Bite’s Dave Portnoy. Within hours, Fantini’s New Haven Style Apizza became a sensation, with people driving for hours from all over the state, just to try Jimmy’s pizza.
There isn’t a whole lot to say about Bechard’s 42-minute documentary, other than, there was nothing I wanted more at that time, then to try Jimmy’s cheesy goodness. While I haven’t gone yet, it is only about 2 hours away, so I might have to hop in the car sometime and grab myself a pie.
