Alien Outpost: Blu-Ray Review
Arriving on Blu-ray this week is IFC Midnight’s “Alien Outpost”, courtesy of Scream Factory. The film stars Adrian Paul, Rick Ravanello and is directed by Jabbar Raisani (Visual Effects Supervisor on “Game of Thrones”, “Machete”, “Predators”).
Set in the near future, aliens had invaded Earth but were forced to flee the planet when they realized that they underestimated the human race. However some aliens (known as Heavies) were left behind and military outposts have been set up to deal with the threat. Outpost 37 happens to be positioned in the most hostile location and a group of soldiers have been sent there along with a documentary film crew.
“Alien Outpost” reminded me a lot of a lower budget “Battle: Los Angeles”. Although this film takes place in a desert landscape, rather than a major city, the lack of story or interesting characters makes the thing kind of bore. The original title of this film was “Outpost 37” which honestly sounds a lot less generic, but then again, a better title doesn’t make for a better film. I think one of the major problems with alien invasion films is the lack of personality, dialogue, or reason from the invading force. I am sure there are plenty that would disagree with me. Regardless, “Alien Outpost” is by far one of the least interesting films in a genre that is already not that interesting.
