Where the Buffalo Roam (Collector’s Edition): Blu-Ray Review

Arriving on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray this week is Art Linson’s 1980 semi-biographical Hunter S. Thompson film, “Where the Buffalo Roam”.  I am totally aware that this title has a fan base and for those who love it, this is a release worth picking up.  Until now, I had never seen “Where the Buffalo Roam”. Having seen “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and “The Rum Diaries”, I have come to the conclusion that a good movie based on Thompson’s writings cannot be adapted into a cohesive film.  Sure, each of these titles do contain elements to make them enjoyable on some level. It could be the direction or even the performances, but when it comes to the screenplay, like the others, “Where the Buffalo Roam” is a mess.

Admittedly, I am a huge fan of early Bill Murry, and though his portrayal of Hunter S. Thompson feels forced at times, he is still a pleasure to watch. For that reason alone, I can’t completely hate on this film. I also can never get enough Peter Boyle.  Fans will be happy to know that this release include ALL of the film’s original music, so Neil Young fans can rejoice.
