I Kill Giants: Blu-Ray Review

Arriving this week on Blu-ray and DVD is the fantasy-drama, “I Kill Giants” starring Madison Wolfe, Imogen Poots, and Zoe Saldana.  Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the story centers on an independent teenager who has believes she is the only one who can protect her hometown from destructive giants.

Barbara Thorson (Wolfe) lives with her brother and her older sister Karen (Poots) who is struggles to keep her family together while trying to hold onto her job.  Although Barbara is often bullied by her classmates, she is strong-willed and doesn’t let others intimidate her.  Her days of walking the school halls alone have come to a halt when a new student named Sophia (Sydney Wade) offers her friendship.  Although Sophia is often uncomfortable with Barbara’s fascination with giants, she finds her to be interesting.

I found some of the best scenes in “I Kill Giants” were when Barbara was meeting with the school psychologist (Zoe Saldana).  It is Mrs. Mollé who helps Barbara open her eyes and see the reality of her life. The sequences involving the giants are also quite good. Yes, this is definitely a smaller budgeted film, but the monsters look good enough and some of the scenes, including one on an abandoned train, are quite thrilling.

There are some strong similarities between “I Kill Giants” and last year’s “A Monster Calls”.  I do prefer the latter, but “I Kill Giants” is still a remarkably beautiful story with a wonderful performance from Wolfe.  I highly recommend checking this one out.
