Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy – 4K UHD Review
Will Ferrell was probably the biggest comedic actor on the planet from 2002-2008. Comedy classics like Talladega Nights, Elf, Step Brothers and of course Anchorman made him a star. The latter may be his most iconic role and the only one to get a sequel. This week Paramount delivers Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy on 4K UHD for the very first time. Fans of Adam Mckay’s film, which is celebrating its’ 20th anniversary have been waiting for this one.
Set in 1974 San Diego, the comedy centers on KVWN channel 4’s celebrity anchorman, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell). His news team is made up of his closest friends, field reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), sportscaster Champ Kind (Dave Koechner) and meteorologist Brick Tamland (Steve Carell). When they aren’t reading the news, they are out drinking and womanizing. Not one of them has any respect for the opposite sex.
Everything in Ron’s life seems to be going great. He has a great job, a beautiful home and the entire city loves him. Things change when journalist Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) joins the network, and she is determined to one day be a news anchor. After many failed attempts at trying to pick her up, Veronica finally agrees to a night on the town with Ron and it doesn’t take long for the two to fall in love.
Unfortunately for Ron, after an altercation with a biker (Jack Black), he doesn’t make it to the station on time to do the news and Veronica steps in for him, where she nails it. This of course angers Burgundy and the short lived romance becomes a battle between KVWN’s new co-anchors.
Anchorman is a comedy classic, witch so many quotable lines (I am in a glass case of emotion). The supporting cast is hilarious, and the many cameos are actually fun. The new 2160p Dolby Vision presentation is spectacular. Anchorman is truly one of the best looking comedies of the past two decades and a lot of it has to do with the mix of colorful 70’s fashion and the beautiful San Diego location. The city truly pops, especially during the daytime scenes. The news teams suits alone really look vibrant and detailed. If you liked how the Blu-ray looked, you will love the incredible the 4K presentation. As for the audio, the 5.1 DTS-HD track has been ported over from the previous Blu-ray release and honestly, that’s fine. There are no new bonus features, everything included on the 2 extra Blu-ray disks were on the previous release as well. If you want the best looking presentation of Anchorman, Paramount delivers here.
