Automata: Movie Review

Set 30 years in the future, planet Earth has become consumed by the desert. Between the deteriorating cities and the deadly acid rain, human life has become one of survival and not living. In this depressing future, humans rely on robots to help them through their days, but when the robotic corporation insurance agent Jacq Vaucan (Antonio Banderas) discovers that the robots are being tampered with in order to act human things get even more complicated.

I am a fan of post-apocalyptic sci-fi films and when robots or androids are added into the mix, even better. Unfortunately, “Automata” just didn’t work for me. Despite an engaging premise, the film has serious pacing issues and Banderas is completely miscast in the role. The biggest compliment I can give writer/director Gabe Ibáñez is for the decision to go with practical robots over CGI. I loved the look of them. Aside from that, this one should be skipped.
