Big Game: Blu-Ray Review
Arriving on DVD and Blu-ray this week is the very entertaining “Big Game” which feels like an action/adventure throw-back from the 1990’s. I so wish this was given a much more deserving theatrical release. It may not have been a huge hit in theaters these days, but I feel like this is the type of movie that really should have been given more of a chance on the big screen.
Oskari (Onni Tommila) has been sent out into the Finland wilderness for one day and one night at the age of thirteen. This is a passage that he must take in order to become a man. As Oskari embarks on his quest, US President William Alan Moore (Samuel L. Jackson) is ejected from Air Force One when the plane is targeted by terrorists. Oskari witnesses the plane crash and also located the Presidents escape pod and now the young boy makes it his mission to protect the President from those who are hunting him.
As I said before, this feels like something we would have seen in theaters twenty years ago and it would have most likely been a blockbuster. However times have changed. There is a lot of great action and Jackson is as good as you would expect. Tommila is the real gem here though. Ray Stevenson does a solid job as the traitorous agent. Victor Garber and Jim Broadbent make the most of their thankless roles here. I highly recommend giving “Big Game” a look, especially if you are a fan of Jackson and 90’s style action films.
