With awards buzz (rightfully) surrounding Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest epic, One Battle After Another, it’s clear the filmmaker continues to operate at the height of his powers. While that film may ultimately be remembered as one of his finest, it is Anderson’s 1997 sophomore feature, Boogie Nights, that has lingered with me most over the years. It remains the PTA film I’ve revisited more than any other, and each viewing reinforces its status as a genuine masterpiece. This week, Boogie Nights arrives on 4K UHD for the first time, offering an opportunity to revisit a film that has lost none of its power.
Set in the San Fernando Valley during the late 1970s and early 1980s, the film follows 17-year-old nightclub dishwasher Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg), whose life is irrevocably changed when he is discovered by adult film director Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds). Jack sees star potential in Eddie and quickly brings him into the industry. Eddie adopts the stage name Dirk Diggler and, alongside his new best friend and fellow performer Reed Rothchild (John C. Reilly), rises to become one of the biggest names in adult entertainment. Anderson chronicles Dirk’s meteoric ascent and inevitable downfall with precision, as fame, excess, and hard drugs take their toll.
Boogie Nights boasts an extraordinary ensemble cast, including Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, William H. Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Heather Graham, Philip Baker Hall, Thomas Jane, Alfred Molina, and Luis Guzmán. Though not Anderson’s first film, it was undeniably his breakout, and it similarly marked a turning point in Wahlberg’s career. Despite his well-documented dissatisfaction with the project, Burt Reynolds delivers one of the finest performances of his career, inhabiting a role that feels tailor-made for him.
While the exact source of the new 4K remaster isn’t specified, the upgraded video presentation is a clear improvement over the previous Blu-ray. Colors are slightly bolder and more refined, even if they don’t dramatically leap off the screen. The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track appears to be the same as the earlier release, which is perfectly acceptable given how strong it already sounded. Bonus features include new American Cinematheque panel discussions featuring Paul Thomas Anderson and John C. Reilly, alongside previously released supplemental material.
The leap from Blu-ray to 4K UHD may not be transformative, but the improvements are noticeable and welcome. For fans of Boogie Nights, this release represents the best home-video presentation of the film currently available—and for a work of this caliber, that alone makes it worth celebrating.
