Brawl in Cell Block 99: DVD Review

Arriving on DVD, Blu-ray, and Ultra High-Def 4K this week is writer/director S. Craig Zahler’s “Brawl in Cell Block 99”.  Being a big fan of his 2015 directorial debut, “Bone Tomahawk”, I was eager to see what the filmmaker would deliver for his sophomore effort. Much like with his first feature, “Brawl” is a slow burn that takes his time to build to an ultimate bloody final act. Zahler is great when it comes to writing dialogue for his characters and because of this, Vince Vaughn has finally been given another chance to show that he can shine on a dramatic level.

The story centers on Bradley (Vaughn), a former boxer-turned-drug courier whose life is turned upside down when he is sent to prison after a job goes south. With his pregnant wife (Jennifer Carpenter) on the outside, and him being locked away with some people that have a strong desire to see him suffer, Bradley is about to show everyone what he is truly capable of.

I absolutely loved “Brawl”, and if you are a fan of “Bone Tomahawk”, you have a pretty good idea of Zahler’s style of storytelling.
