Clowntown: Movie Review

clowntown

In limited theaters on September 30th and on VOD/DVD October 4th, is the killer clown horror film, “Clowntown”. Tom Nagel makes his feature film directorial debut about four friends that find themselves stranded in a town run by deranged clowns.

While on their way to a concert, Brad (Brian Nagel), Sarah (Lauren Compton), Mike (Andrew Station), and Jill (Katie Keene) get sidetracked and wind up in a seemingly abandoned town.  They want to leave but it seems that someone disabled their vehicle. To make matters worse, machete and bat wielding clowns begins to appear and they soon realize that these clowns are out for blood.  As you might expect, “Clowntown” becomes a cat and mouse game between the clowns and the group of friends who just want to survive.

Aside from having a catchy title and some creepy looking clowns, “Clowntown” doesn’t have a whole lot to offer.  I am all about creepy clowns, being a fan of “It” and “Killer Klowns from Outer Space”. I just wish “Clowntown” was more fun.  I realize that the story is based on true evens, so It needs to be more grounded that the other films I mentioned, but it also needs to keep its’ audience interested.   That being said, Nagel does a decent job with his first feature and “Clowntown” isn’t terrible. It moves along at a decent pace and the clowns themselves are effective. Maybe if it gets a sequel (Clowntown 2: Red Nose of Death), they can get a little more crazy with it.
