Cuban Fury: Movie Review
Nick Frost, Salsa Dancer? As a fan of the Frost-man, I was definitely up for that premise and “Cuban Fury” delivers. Just watching the guy dancing his ass off is worth giving the flick a chance. With stiff competition at the box office, including the release of the mind-numbingly awful but heavily promoted “A Haunted House 2” and the new sci-fi Johnny Depp flick “Transcendence”, it will be easy for “Cuban Fury” to get lost in the multiplexes. However if you had to pick one of the new releases this weekend, the salsa-dancing-comedy is your best bet.
Bruce Garrett (Frost) was a child salsa-dancing champion, but after getting attacked by a bunch of bullies, he decided to hang up his dancing shoes. Twenty Five years later, Bruce falls for his new boss Julia (Rashida Jones), who just so happens to love salsa dancing. To win her affection, Bruce seeks the help of his old dance teacher Ron Parfitt (Ian McShane) to help get his moves back. However, learning to dance again isn’t Bruce’s only challenge, he also must compete with his co-worker Drew (Chris O’Dowd), who also set his sights on Julia.
“Cuban Fury” isn’t great, but it is funny and at times kind of sweet. We root for Bruce and want to see him get the girl and of course, dance his ass off. Look out for an awesome little drive-by cameo as well, which will sure to make Frost fans very happy.
