Death Becomes Her (Collector’s Edition): Blu-Ray Review

Arriving on Blu-ray this week is the Collector’s Edition of 1992’s “Death Becomes Her”, which stars Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn, Bruce Willis and directed by Robert Zemeckis.    With the “Back to the Future” trilogy being my favorite film series, I remember being super excited for “Death Becomes Her” upon its theatrical release.  I mean, this is the guy that directed not only “BTTF” but also “Romancing the Stone” and “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”. How could I not have high hopes?  Unfortunately I wound up being underwhelmed and I don’t think I have seen the film again since. That is until now.

“Death Becomes Her” is actually not as bad as I remembered.  I am not saying it’s good, but I can now appreciate more what Zemeckis was trying to do.  Although still silly, he was obviously trying to create a dark-comedy for a more adult audience.  He couldn’t have asked for a better cast either.  Streep and Hawn are fantastic, and Willis fared well too playing a total opposite of his “Die Hard” character.

The problem with “Death Becomes Her” is that it’s just too silly to work as a dark-comedy.  This is a similar flaw in 1985’s “Clue”, although Tim Curry makes that movie awesome.   The Academy Award winning visual effects look quite dated today, but they are still impressive for the time they were created.   Fans of “Death Becomes Her” will be pleased with this stunning HD transfer, plus there are new bonus features to take in as well.
