Delivery Man: Movie Review

“Delivery Man” is a remake of the 2011 Canadian comedy “Starbuck”. Both films were helmed by writer/director Ken Scott.   This time around Vince Vaughn is taking over the role originated by Patrick Huard.  Admittedly, I never saw the original, but I know many who absolutely loved it.  It could be a good thing having not seen “Starbuck”, because I probably would have enjoyed “Delivery Man” far less.

Shortly after David Wozniak (Vaughn) learns that his girlfriend Emma (Cobie Smulders) is pregnant with his child, he is informed that a fertility clinic in which he donated sperm to more than a handful of times (pun intended) over twenty years ago, has used his man-juice to produce 533 children. 142 of those children are now filing a lawsuit to reveal his identity.  David, donated the sperm under the name Starbuck.

David, an underachieving meat delivery truck driver for his father’s company has almost always let his friends and family down. Ignoring the advice given by his best friend/lawyer Brett (played awesomely by Chris Pratt), David decides to seek out some of his offspring in hopes to get to know them, without telling them who he really is.  When he realizes that he is able to make a difference in each one of their lives, he begins to care about all of them.

“Delivery Man” is an overall nice film and perfect for a Thanksgiving release.  Sure it is sappy and ridiculous, but it is also pretty funny.  “Deliver Man” works best during the scenes where David connects with each of his kids, and when he realizes that each one of them have found each other and developed an unparalleled sibling bond.  They have formed a support group with the single common wish of discovering where they came from.   It is really heartfelt.  To be honest, I would have been more interested in seeing the same movie from the point of view of the offspring.  Nevertheless, “Delivery Man” is worth checking out.
