In 2005, director Doug Liman delivered the perfect mix of action and humor with “Mr.& Mrs. Smith” He misfired in 2008 with “Jumper”, but now the filmmaker has teamed up with Tom Cruise and delivered an awesome action spectacle with “Edge of Tomorrow”. Even though the summer is just getting started and there are a few tent pole films I am looking forward to, I feel like “Edge of Tomorrow” is going to be hard to beat.

Major William Cage (Cruise) is a U.S. military officer who has actually never been in combat. When Earth was invaded by aliens, General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson) drops the untrained Cage into the frontline the war. Minutes later Cage is killed in action, only to have time reset to the day prior. Somehow, Cage unknowingly obtained the aliens ability to control time. Each time Cage is killed, time is reset with his memories still intact.

Helping Cage, is Rita (Emily Blunt), the only other person who had this ability but lost it when she had a blood transfusion after an injury. Cage keeps getting killed and time keeps resetting, but with each reset, Cage becomes a better soldier and can predict what will happen, since he has already been through it.

What makes ‘Edge of Tomorrow” so good, is that is manages to be original. Even down to the look of the aliens, they are unlike anything we have seen before on screen. The movie also delivers a lot of laughs. Some of the best moments are the multiple times Cage gets killed. Some are just downright hilarious. I think my favorite would be him getting run over by a car while trying to sneak away from his platoon.

Blunt is great as the tough soldier, and we have never seen the actress in a role like this. Cruise is in top form as the cowardly and selfish Cage, who winds up becoming the hero. One of my favorite performances would be from Bill Paxton as the Master Sergeant Farell who enjoys busting Cage’s balls.

The visual effects are fantastic, especially at the beach invasion, which we spend quite a bit of time at via time loop. If you are looking for an awesomely good time at the movies this summer and want a film that is just as good as its special effects, then make sure to go see “Edge of Tomorrow”
