Forsaken: Blu-Ray Review

forsaken

Arriving this week on Blu-ray and DVD is “Forsaken”, which pairs father and son Kiefer and Donald Sutherland for the first time on screen. They are joined by Brian Cox, and Demi Moore.   The cast alone piqued my interest, unfortunately I had no idea I was in for something so preachy. Not sure if “Forsaken” was meant to come across as faith-based film with blood and bad language but that’s exactly what it felt like to me.

In 1872, John Henry Clayton (Kiefer Sutherland) returns home to Fowler, Wyoming with the hope of re-connecting with his estranged father, Reverend Clayton (Donald Sutherland). The first thing John Henry learns is that his mother had passed away while he was gone.  That however isn’t the only bad news.  James McCurdy (Brian Cox), is buying up all the properties around the town and those who will not sell will have to deal with his hired guns.  John Henry wants no part of any of it, but that all changes when his father is attacked.

“Forsaken” is very old school and that is one element that really helps the film.  The casting is key as well.  However, those who have a low tolerance for being preached to (like me), will definitely have some trouble getting through it. If you like the cast and you like the genre, then it might be worth giving a look, however I can’t say that I was much of a fan.
