Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man: Blu-Ray Review
Arriving on Blu-ray this week is 1991’s ” Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man”, courtesy of Shout! Factory. It has been more than two decades since I have seen this one and there were so many aspects of the story that I had completely forgotten. For one, I did not remember that this was technically a sci-fi flick, taking place 5 years in the future (1996). Another thing that slipped my mind was how hilarious Daniel Baldwin looked in his bulletproof trench coat. Don’t even get me started on the direction by Simon Wincer (“Operation Dumbo Drop”, “The Phantom”, “Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles”, “Free Willy”). Wincer’s directorial efforts speak volumes, but he has a gift for making bad movies entertaining to watch.
When Harley (Mickey Rourke) and Marlboro (Don Johnson) learn that the bank is about to shut down their favorite bar, the two bikers decide to rob an armored truck. After the robbery, they realize that is wasn’t cash they got away with, but millions of dollars worth of a deadly new drug. The bank president, who moonlights as a drug kingpin (Tom Sizemore), wants his product back and now Harley and Marlboro are in way over their heads.
The writing in “Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man” is so bad, but what else can you expect from the guy who penned “Who’s Your Caddy?” and “Half Past Dead”? Thankfully Rourke and Johnson help keep things entertaining. Fans of this title will be happy to know that the transfer looks fantastic. If you love this movie, you might want to pick up this release.
