I, Madman: Blu-Ray Review
Arriving on Blu-ray this week is 1989’s “I, Madman”, courtesy of Scream Factory. For those unfamiliar with the film, it was directed by Tibor Takács (“The Gate 1 & 2”) and stars Jenny Wright (“Near Dark”) and Clayton Rohner (“Just one of the Guys”).
What’s interesting about “I, Madman” is that is mostly feels like an extended episode of “Tales from the Darkside” or “Tales from the Crypt” and that is fine by me. Prior to screening the Blu-ray, I had never actually seen this one before. I was aware of it, but just never got around to checking it out. Thanks to Shout!/Scream, I now had an excuse to find the time to give it a look.
The story centers on Virginia (Wright), a bookstore clerk who has been searching for the hard-to-find, second book, titled “I, Madman” by the late author Malcolm Brand. One day the book mysteriously shows up at her front door and without questioning where it came from, she decides to crack it open and give it a read. Virginia’s boyfriend, Richard doesn’t like how obsessed she gets over the horror novel.
What Richard doesn’t realize is that the maniac from the story, Dr. Alan Kessler (Randall William Cook) has been released from the pages and now is killing people in the real world. He also has his sights set on Virginia, who he thinks is the girl in the book that he is obsessed with.
“I, Madman” is a fun 80’s horror film that also features a stop-motion animated creature that looks a little too much like one of the monsters from “The Gate”. However, I have a weakness for stop-motion, so I will be forgiving. If you have never seen “I, Madman”, it is worth checking out. If you are already a fan, then this release is worth picking up.
