Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town: Blu-Ray Review

Arriving on Blu-ray this week is writer/director Christian Papierniak’s feature film debut, “Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town”.  The filmmaker has worked on a few short films in the past, but he is best known for his work on the NBA 2K video game series.  That may be why “Izzy” at times felt like I was watching someone play a game in which a character must reach a destination within a time frame, interacting with other characters along the way.  Not saying that is a bad thing, but there are some glitches.

The story centers on Izzy, a young musician whose life has become aimless. When she finds out that her ex is about to marry one of her old friends, Izzy must find a way to get to the other side of Los Angeles. With no money and no transportation, Izzy does everything in her power to stop the man she still loves from going through with the wedding.

“Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town” mostly works due to the highly energetic performance from Mackenzie Davis in the title role. She is not a likable character, but she is entertaining to watch.  The problem with “Izzy” is that many of the characters she runs into aren’t. It’s a shame too because Brandon T. Jackson, Annie Potts, Lakeith Stanfield, Alia Shawkat and Haley Joel Osment are much better than what they deliver here.  I did however dig Carrie Coon as Izzy’s sister Virginia.  One of the film’s best moments comes when the bitter siblings are cornered into performing a song together at a dinner party.

“Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town” has great energy, but unfortunately not a whole lot else. However, if you are a fan of Mackenzie Davis, it might be worth checking out just for her alone.
