After a lengthy delay, Mortal Kombat II finally arrived in theaters this past May. Originally filmed in 2023, Warner Bros. postponed the sequel multiple times before ultimately releasing it a few months ago. By then, much of its target audience had already shifted its attention toward the upcoming Street Fighter reboot arriving later this year. Fortunately, the wait proved worthwhile.
Mortal Kombat II is a worthy follow-up to the 2021 reboot, delivering bigger action, stronger visual effects, and a welcome boost in humor. Josh Lawson once again steals every scene as the wisecracking Kano, whose comedic timing makes him one of the franchise’s most entertaining characters.
The sequel centers on Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), a washed-up action star who is unexpectedly pulled into a high-stakes interdimensional tournament. The fate of Earthrealm hangs in the balance as Outworld emperor Shao Kahn seeks to obtain Shinnok’s Amulet, granting him immortality and the power to conquer Earth after luring its greatest champions into his realm.
Returning favorites including Raiden, Jax, Sonya Blade, and Liu Kang are ready to fight, and longtime fans can expect several surprising twists along the way—one of which arrives surprisingly early in the film. One of the sequel’s biggest improvements over its predecessor is its presentation of the tournament arenas. The locations are not only far more faithful to the video games but are also visually more imaginative and exciting. At just under two hours, the film maintains a brisk pace and rarely overstays its welcome.
While I enjoyed the 2021 film, Mortal Kombat II embraces the franchise’s over-the-top nature with greater confidence and has considerably more fun doing it. Lawson’s Kano remains the standout, and his performance is so entertaining that I’d gladly watch a future installment with the character taking on an even larger role.
Unfortunately, Mortal Kombat II underperformed at the box office, leaving the future of the franchise uncertain. Whether another sequel materializes remains to be seen.
For fans of the games and the previous films, however, there’s plenty to enjoy. Mortal Kombat II arrives on 4K UHD this week and delivers exactly what fans expect: brutal fights, memorable characters, and plenty of over-the-top entertainment.
