Here we are at the end of 2016 and it’s time for me to give you my picks for the best and worst films of 2016. I haven’t seen everything, so of course there could very well be films out there that I may enjoy or hate more than the ones on my list. I must be clear that these two list are comprised from what I have seen. Having said that, I have seen a great deal of the theatrical releases.
Best of 2016:
- Green Room
- Hacksaw Ridge
- A Monster Calls
- La La Land
- Manchester by the Sea
- The Nice Guys
- Moonlight
- 20th Century Women
- Fences
- Zootopia
Worst of 2016:
- Zoolander 2
- Bad Santa 2
- Ride Along 2
- Rules Don’t Apply
- The Neon Demon
- The Forest
- Alice Through the Looking Glass
- Keeping Up with the Joneses
- Man Down
- The Girl on the Train
There you have it, those are my lists. I do want to mention a few films that did not make the cut but are worth pointing out. Four films that just missed my top ten best of the year. I am a huge fan of Fede Alvarez’s “Don’t Breathe”. This is a masterfully shot thriller that has a very retro feel to it. It is one of only two films in 2016 that I saw twice in theaters. The Clint Eastwood directed “Sully” starring Tom Hanks also just missed out, although I think one of the things I enjoyed most was how it took advantage of the IMAX technology. The comic book adaptation “Deadpool” was a great deal of fun. Clever, original, and it never felt like it held back. I did enjoy “Captain America: Civil War” but “Deadpool” gave us something refreshing. Finally, although not many people took a chance on “Eddie the Eagle”, this was probably the feel-good movie of the year. Sweet, funny, and sported one hell of an 80’s soundtrack.
