Raising Cain (Collector’s Edition): Blu-Ray Review
Arriving on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray this week is Brian De Palma’s 1992 thriller, “Raising Cain”. I would never call this one of the acclaimed director’s best films. Actually, it could be considered one of his worst. However, thanks in no small part to John Lithgow, “Raising Cain” is entertainingly idiotic. Lithgow has had a long healthy career in Hollywood, however he has headlined very few feature films. This is probably his biggest role to date and despite some terrible writing, it is also one of his best.
For those of you who haven’t seen “Raising Cain”, the story centers on Doctor Carter Nix (Lithgow), who happens to suffer from multiple personality disorder. When Carter discovers his wife, Jenny (Lolita Davidovich) is having an affair with an old flame (Steven Bauer), his street hustler personality, Cain takes it upon himself to exact revenge. There is actually more to the story than that, but the added elements cause “Raising Cain” to fly off the rails. With all its’ flaws, I still enjoy this film quite a lot.
Thanks to Scream Factory, this Collector’s Edition includes the theatrical cut and the director’s cut, along with new interviews with much of the cast. Fans should definitely ad this one to their collection.
