Serial Mom (Collector’s Edition): Blu-Ray Review
Arriving this week on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray is John Waters’ 1994 black comedy, “Serial Mom”. I always loved Kathleen Turner and I feel that her performance in “Serial Mom” is probably her best to date. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge fan of “Romancing the Stone”, “War of the Roses”, and “Peggy Sue Got Married”, but Turner has never been better than she was here. That is why it’s surprising that “Serial Mom” marks the movie star’s final top billing role in a feature film. Sure, the movie was a box office bomb, but not something that she couldn’t have bounced back from.
“Serial Mom” isn’t a great film, but Turner elevates the material with her performance. Having Ricki Lake and Matthew Lillard cast as her children of course helps as well. Lillard’s character Chip works in a video store and has a massive love for horror films. Many of us can relate to that. Unfortunately this was the last film from Waters that I actually enjoyed. If you are a fan of “Serial Mom”, this should definitely be added to your collection.
