Sex Tape: Movie Review

My expectations were set very low before entering the screening for “Sex Tape”. I am a fan of Jason Seigel but not so much for Diaz. Thankfully, because of my low expectations, I found myself mildly amused by this feature length iPad advertisement. There are actually a handful of solid laugh-out-loud moments and “Sex Tape” includes enough enjoyable supporting players to help move things along. Rob Corddry, Ellie Kemper, Rob Lowe, Nat Faxon, all bring a little something and the final act brings a fun little surprise appearance by another comedic actor.

Annie (Diaz) and Jay (Segal) have been together since college. After having two kids and dealing with everything that comes with parenthood and work, the couple has forgotten how to be intimate. With the kids spending the night at grandma’s and securing the house to themselves, Annie and Jay decide to make a 3 hour sex video, inspired by the book “The Joy of Sex”. As we know from the trailers, the sex video has been uploaded to the cloud and is now synced to every used iPad that Jay has given away to friends and the mailman. One also went to the CEO of the company that wants to do business with Anne based on her clean-cut image. He is played amusingly by Rob Lowe.

The rest of “Sex Tape” follows the couple through the city, tracking down the iPads they gave away. They are joined by their best friends Robby (Corddry) and his wife Tess (Kemper). Of course, some of the film’s funniest moments involve the sex act itself and the opening act where Annie and Jay have countless sexual encounters around the college campus is really funny. Sure much of the humor feels recycled but Diaz was able to make me laugh (which is something she can rarely do) after he character does a bump of cocaine.

“Sex Tape” isn’t a great movie, but if you are looking for a comedy this weekend, you could do a lot worse…like “Tammy”.
