Sleeping with Other People: Movie Review

The new R-rated rom-com “Sleeping with Other People” is sweeter and funnier than I expected. Written and directed by Leslye Headland (Bachelorette), the story centers on two people with serious relationship issues that form a friendship that helps reform them both. Don’t let the title fool you, the film is less about sex and more about the characters struggling with their issues.

The story begins more than a decade ago when Lainey (Alison Brie) and Jake (Jason Sudeikis) lose their virginity to each other on the night they met at college. Cut to present day, both of them run into each other for the first time since that night while attending a sex addiction meeting. Jake has grown into a good-natured womanizer and Lainey has become a serial cheater. Although Jake and Lainey are obviously attracted to each other, they manage to form a platonic relationship.

Although “Sleeping with Other People” is very funny, it is the terrific chemistry between Brie and Sudeikis that is what makes the film stand out. They are terrific on screen together. There is a solid supporting cast that includes Adam Scott, Amanda Peet, Natasha Lyonne, and Jason Mantzoukas, who is the film’s scene stealer. This is definitely a fun date movie and with a lack of good comedy out there, this should fill the bill.
