Slither (Collector’s Edition): Blu-Ray Review
Arriving on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray this week is the horror-comedy, “Slither”. In the years between getting his start with Troma and breaking out big with Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy”, writer/director James Gunn have us this fun yet underappreciated gem. “Slither” is a nod to the great small-town horror films of the 80’s which successfully blends CGI and practical effects as well as horror and comedy. It gets almost everything perfect, right down to the casting.
Although the story isn’t very original, borrowing from “Night of the Creeps”, “The Blob”, it’s tongue-and-cheek nature makes it stand out from the pack. The practical effects are wonderful and the cast which include Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, Gregg Henry, and Elizabeth Banks all sell the story. However, it is Rooker that really shines here. The character actor has had some great roles over the years but I would say this is one of his top three.
Genre fans should have “Slither” in their collection and there isn’t a better release on the market than this one from Scream Factory.
