Submerged: Blu-Ray Review

Arriving on Blu-ray this week is IFC Midnight’s “Submerged”, courtesy of Scream Factory.  Helming this limo-under-water flick is director Steven C. Miller, who impressed me in 2011 with “The Aggression Scale” and again the following year with “Under the Bed”.  His remake of “Silent Night, Deadly Night” I found a bit of a disappointment but he obviously has a knack for genre filmmaking.  Although flawed, “Submerged” is a solid, well-paced thriller that doesn’t go where one might expect.

The story begins with a stretch limo being run off the road and into the water.  A group of friends are trapped inside the sunken vehicle, along with the limo driver, Matt (Jonathan Bennett), who happens to be an ex-soldier turned bodyguard   We are unsure why the limo was forced off the road, but through a series of Matt’s flashbacks, we learn about the events leading up to this disaster.

At first, I thought most of “Submerged” would take place within the limo as everyone tries to figure out how to escape. However, much of the story takes place during flashbacks.  This is a good thing.  Sure, the characters are pretty one-dimensional but thanks to the writing by Scott Milam (“Mother’s Day” remake), there is much more to the story than expected.  “Submerged” isn’t a very memorable film, but it’s worth giving a look.
