The Devil’s Dolls: Blu-Ray Review

Arriving this week on Blu-ray is Padraig Reynold’s supernatural horror film, “The Devil’s Dolls”.  We had the pleasure of hosting the North American Premiere, this past August during the Popcorn Frights Film Festival and if you haven’t had the chance to check it out, this is the perfect time to do so.

Within the first few minutes of “The Devil’s Dolls” we are treated to one of the best horror movie kills in years and it involves a cameo from Graham Skipper (“Beyond the Gates”, “The Mind’s Eye”).   Sure, we have seen countless horror films involving possessed children, but “The Devil’s Dolls” has a genuine retro feel to it. The possession doesn’t just stick to the child, it makes its way to other characters, thanks to these handmade worry doll talismans possessed by a dead serial killer. In one of the film’s best sequences, we see a possessed husband going after his wife but not before taking out the gardener.  “The Devil’s Dolls” is also awesomely bloody.

Danny Kolker and Christopher Wiehl make their screenwriting debut and even though they borrow quite a bit from other films in the genre, they keep things tight and moving. Running at only 85 minutes, “The Devil’s Dolls” moves along quickly.  I think one of the reason this stands out from the recent string of possession films is that this feels more like a slasher flick (a less humorous version of Wes Craven’s “Shocker”).  Slashers have always been my favorite type of horror flick, so when one comes along that brings the fun, I can’t help but recommend it.
