The Hoarder: DVD Review

Arriving this week on DVD and digital is “The Hoarder”, a killer-in-a-self-storage flick, starring Mischa Barton, Robert Knepper, and directed by Matt Winn.   Although there isn’t much that stands out here, “The Hoarder” manages to be a brisk 86 minute slasher that may be light on gore but still entertaining.

Suspecting her fiancé of cheating, Ella (Barton) decides to break into his self-storage unit with the help of her friend Molly (Emily Atack) so she can confirm her suspicions.  The unit they are trying to get to happens to be in the basement and unfortunately there is there is something else down there other than storage.  After Molly is killed by the creature in the storage, Ella runs into Vince (Robert Knepper), who happens to be a cop and Willow (Valene Kane), who is kind of in a world of her own.  They are joined by Ian (John Sackville), who’s wife was just killed by the creature and Rashid (Richard Sumitro) who is using his storage unit as a residence.  Together, the group are trying to find a way out of the storage facility that is already closed for the night, before they are all killed.

“The Hoarder” isn’t great, and it does lack in scares.  However the film’s weakest element is Barton.  She just seems out of her element when it comes to horror.  She is not the least bit engaging which is an issue when playing the final girl.  The rest of the cast does a solid job and if you are a fan of horror, this may be worth a rental.
