The Incredible Shrinking Woman (Collector’s Edition): Blu-Ray Review

Joel Schumacher’s 1981 comedy, “The Incredible Shrinking Woman” is a film I fondly remember watching numerous times on television as a kid. Out of all of Lily Tomlin’s roles in the 80’s it was this one, “9 to 5” and “All of Me” that stand out the most.  Shout Factory is releasing “The Incredible Shrinking Woman” this week on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, which marks its’ first Hi-Def release.

This is definitely the best version of the film to be released on home media, however it is far from perfect. Shout Factory put together this transfer using the best film elements they could get their hands on. Because of this the quality of the presentation is very uneven. The lighting and colors vary, with some heavy graining in certain shots.  I am rarely disappointed in a Shout Factory release, as the company puts out some of the best Collector’s Editions around. Although I wasn’t a fan of the transfer, I understand that they did the best they could.

So is “The Incredible Shrinking Woman” worth picking up?  If you are a fan of the film, this is the best transfer on the market. It also had a nice collection of bonus features including an interview with Lily Tomlin and Joel Schumacher.  I have seen the 2009 DVD release which is pretty bad, this is far superior.  Despite my issues with the transfer, I am happy to have the film in my collection as I am sure fans will be as well.
