One of my favorite films of the year, Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck, arrived on Blu-ray and 4K UHD this week. Adapted from Stephen King’s novella of the same name, it stands alongside some of my favorite non-horror King adaptations, including Stand by Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and now The Life of Chuck. While I’m a lifelong horror fan, it’s King’s more dramatic, deeply human stories that have left the greatest impression on me. That’s not to say I don’t love his horror adaptations—many rank among my favorites—but these quieter, more personal tales occupy a unique and lasting place in my heart.
Although Tom Hiddleston is billed as the star, his role is smaller than one might expect. That’s because The Life of Chuck unfolds in three acts, portraying Charles “Chuck” Krantz at different stages of his life—ages 7, 11, 17, and 39. The story is told in reverse, a narrative structure that may feel unconventional at first but resonates powerfully as the film progresses.
Admittedly, The Life of Chuck can feel uneven at times, particularly with its shifts in tone, but it remains an undeniably heartfelt film. Even on a second viewing, I found myself deeply moved by its message. Mia Sara, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mark Hamill, Samantha Sloyan, and Carl Lumbly all deliver strong supporting performances, yet it is Benjamin Pajak, as 11-year-old Chuck, who truly steals every scene. The less said about the film itself, the better—it’s an experience best approached with as little prior knowledge as possible, allowing its wonder to unfold naturally.
