The Poughkeepsie Tapes: Blu-Ray Review

The time has come horror fans.  It’s been a decade since “The Poughkeepsie Tapes” wrapped filming. Originally slotted for a theatrical release in 2008, the film didn’t become available to the public until 2014. Even then, it was only available on Direct-TV’s VOD service for about a month before being pulled.  Here we are in 2017 and “The Poughkeepsie Tapes” is finally being released on Blu-ray/DVD combo pack courtesy of Scream Factory. From the minds that brought us “Quarantine” and “As Above, So Below” comes this effective horror film that documents the murders of a fictional serial killer.

“The Poughkeepsie Tapes” combines interviews and footages from hundreds of video tapes which were uncovered by the FBI.  We get to see the horrific actions of the “Water Street Butcher” including his favorite victim, Cheryl Dempsey (Stacy Chbosky). The reason “The Poughkeepsie Tapes” works so well is because director John Erick Dowdle along with his co-writer Drew Dowdle make is all seem so real.  Everything we see on screen feels like it could really happen and that helps make it terrifying.

It’s a shame that “The Poughkeepsie Tapes” has been shelved for so long, because unlike most found-footage type horror films, this one was deserving of a theatrical release. Thankfully you now have a chance to see it for yourself.
