The Sentinel: Blu-Ray Review
Arriving on Blu-ray this week is 1977’s “The Sentinel”, directed by Michael Winner (“Death Wish”). I am not sure how this one flew by me over the years. If I had seen it on late night cable as a kid, I can’t for the life of me remember. One of the more interesting aspects about this otherwise mess of a movie is that it features Jeff Goldblum, Tom Berenger, Beverly D’Angelo, Jerry Orbach and Christopher Walken in bit parts. At the time, they were all relatively unknown. That is a pretty impressive list of before-they-were-stars to have in one film. Little did anyone know that a decade later Orbach would be putting Baby in the corner.
The story centers on model Alison Parker (Christina Raines) who has just moved into a specious brownstone apartment building in New York. Her boyfriend Michael (Chris Sarandon) wanted Alison to move in with him instead, but Alison felt the need to get a place of her own. What Alison didn’t realize is that her new apartment might just be the gateway to hell.
“The Sentinel” has its fans, although having just seen it for the first time, I can tell you that I am not one of them. However, fans of the film should be very pleased with this release. The new HD transfer looks terrific and there are some great new bonus features as well. Scream Factory definitely understands what their fans like.
