Horror films are big business right now. Movies like Obsession, Backrooms, and Send Help have dominated the box office. Perhaps if They Will Kill You hadn’t opened just one week apart from Ready or Not 2—which also failed to meet expectations—it might have made a bigger impact commercially. Instead, director Kirill Sokolov’s action-horror-comedy earned just $19 million against a $20 million production budget. That’s a real shame because They Will Kill You is one of the year’s biggest hidden gems. In fact, it’s easily my favorite genre film of 2026, and this week it arrives on 4K UHD.
The film follows Asia Reaves (Zazie Beetz) on her first day as a housekeeper at The Virgil, a New York City high-rise with a sinister and mysterious past. What her new employer, superintendent Lily Woodhouse (Patricia Arquette), doesn’t realize is that Asia has an ulterior motive for taking the job. Her estranged younger sister, Maria (Myha’la), also works in the building, and Asia is determined to find her and convince her to leave. What she doesn’t know is that The Virgil harbors a horrifying secret. Asia wasn’t hired to clean apartments—she was chosen to be a sacrifice for the building’s residents, who possess terrifying supernatural abilities.
The supporting cast, including Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Paterson Joseph, all deliver strong performances. Still, it’s Beetz who completely owns the film. If you thought she was a force to be reckoned with as Domino in Deadpool 2, just wait until you see what she does here.
Imagine a horror-comedy version of John Wick, crank up the gore, embrace the absurdity, and you’re in for one wildly entertaining ride. Logic takes a back seat for its lean 94-minute runtime, but that’s entirely the point. They Will Kill You is stylish, relentless, and outrageously fun, delivering some of the bloodiest entertainment horror fans will find all year.
