Top Five: Movie Review

Chris Rock is funny. There is no denying that. When it comes to films however, his best work happens when he is behind the camera as well as in front. Although Rock’s 2003 directorial debut “Head of State” was hit and miss, 2007’s “I Think I Love My Wife” proved that Rock could deliver an intelligent and funny film as not only its’ star but as the writer and director too. Rock’s latest offering “Top Five” is the comedian’s best work yet and at times feels like it is his most personal.

Comedian-turned-film star Andre Allen (Chris Rock) doesn’t feel funny anymore. After hitting it big with the blockbusters “Hammy the Bear” and its’ two sequels, Allen decided to turn his attention to more meaningful film choices. On the theatrical release day of his new dramatic movie, Andre goes on a walk through New York City with a beautiful New York Times journalist (Rosario Dawson), who has been tasked with interviewing the star. Andre is at first reluctant since the film critic for the Times has repeatedly trashed Andre’s films.

One thing we learn about Andre is that he is a recovering alcoholic that is four years sober. The moment he cleaned himself up, he felt that he stopped being funny. Andre feels that is was the drugs and drinking that help make him a successful comedian. We learn quite a bit about the star through his day in New York. We meet his family, his friends, his ex-girlfriend and his reality star fiancĂ© (Gabrielle Union). Andre’s best friend (JB Smoove) is also his bodyguard. There are also a ton of cameos in “Top Five” but the ones that get the biggest laughs are Cedric the Entertainer, Kevin Heart, Jerry Seinfeld and hip-hop artist DMX .

“Top Five” is smart and well written, but most importantly, it is damn funny. Dawson is also fantastic here as the journalist that has a few secrets of her own and the chemistry between her and Rock is terrific. She also has a great moment that involves a tampon and some hot sauce. If you are like me and feel good comedies are few and far between now-a-days, don’t miss out on this one.
