Unfinished Business: Movie Review

Director Ken Scott teams up with his “Delivery Man” star Vince Vaughn for their latest comedy “Unfinished Business”. Vaughn hasn’t made me laugh in about a decade. I can’t think of a single time he has been funny since 2005’s “Wedding Crashers”. He continues to be funny-free in his latest film, but co-star Dave Franco scores a handful of chuckles and is the only one able to deliver anything even remotely entertaining.

Dan Trunkman (Vaughn) has just left his job to start a new company. His first two associates are Timothy McWinters (Tom Wilkinson) and Mike Pancake (Franco). Timothy has just been let go from the same company Dan departed from and Mike just happened to be in the parking lot after a not-so-successful job interview at the same company.

Dan has a wife and two children to support, Timothy wants to leave his wife but not leave her penniless when he does and Mike is a bit of a slow learner but is just happy to be a part of the team. All three of them are relying on a business trip to Europe which they are expecting to close a big deal.

As you would expect, the trip goes completely off the rails as one things goes wrong after another. Much of the humor is juvenile but even I have to admit the scene in the gay-bar bathroom with penises sticking out of holes in each stall had me laughing. One of them belonging to a character played by the always likable Nick Frost. Veteran actor Tom Wilkinson looks painfully uncomfortable in many of these sex related scenes.

“Unfinished Business” does have its moments, mostly due to Franco, but there is just not enough here to recommend. Franco is good enough for me to suggest maybe waiting for Netflix.
