Wrecker: DVD Review

wrecker

Arriving on DVD this week is the new horror film “Wrecker” which stars Anna Hutchison (“Cabin in the Woods”) and Andrea Whitburn (“Poison Ivy: The Secret Society”). Much like (though not as good as) Steven Spielberg’s “Duel” and John Dahl’s “Joyride”, “Wrecker” is another maniac in a truck film in which unsuspecting victims are terrorized by a faceless force with a tank full of fuel. Does that mean “Wrecker” should be skipped? No exactly. Those who are fans of this sub-genre will most likely find some entertainment here. I sure did.

Unlike the two better films mentioned before, the victims here are women this time around and instead of an 18 wheeler as the killing machine, this time around we get a tow truck. As the way most of these films start off, the main characters, Emily (Hutchison) and her best friend Leslie (Whitburn) decide to get off the highway during their road trip in order to take a short cut. When they decide to pass a tow truck that is driving too slow for their liking, things begin get a bit scary for them as the trucker seems to have his own agenda.

One thing I can say about “Wrecker” is that it is never boring. Running only 83 minutes, it moves along pretty quickly and even though the film is predictable, it manages to still be fun. The cast is serviceable and the direction from Bafaro quite solid. I wouldn’t be surprised if a “Wrecker 2: Get Wrecked” was happened at some point.
