Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead – Blu-Ray Review

wyrmwood

Arriving this week on Blu-ray is the Australian zombie flick “Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead”, courtesy of Scream Factory. Back in 2013, Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner (the writers and director of “Wyrmwood”) raised $37,000+ via crowd funding to produce a film that they referred to as “Mad Max” meets “Dawn of the Dead”. Two years later it is now available in the US and fans of post-apocalyptic and zombie films will get a kick out of “Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead”.

Barry (Jay Gallagher) has just lost his wife and daughter to the zombie apocalypse. Stranded in the middle of nowhere, Barry just wants to take his own life. Fortunately a stranger shows up and talks Barry into joining him on the road. Unfortunately that stranger doesn’t live very long and now Barry is teamed up with a group of strangers in the same boat that he is in.

Barry’s sister Brooke (Bianca Bradey) has been taken prisoner by a deranged doctor who is conducting experiments on her as well as zombies, injecting Brooke with zombie blood. What the doctor doesn’t realize is that his experiments will result in giving Brooke and ability that will give her power over the zombies. Barry is unaware of his sisters situation as he is on his way to rescue her, along with the group of masked zombie killers.

“Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead” is a fresh change of pace in a time when we are overrun with zombie films and television shows. Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner include some new ideas that help change things up. One of my favorites would be that the zombie blood is flammable and can be used as gasoline. This is a fun movie and definitely worth checking out. The Blu-ray is also loaded with bonus features.
