Extraterrestrial: Blu-Ray Review
Arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray this week is IFC Midnight’s “Extraterrestrial”, written/directed by The Vicious Brothers (Gave Encounters), courtesy of Scream Factory. Those of you who enjoy films that center on a group of young adults spending the weekend at a cabin in the woods, only to be picked off by something sinister, will probably have some fun with this one.
April (Brittany Allen), her boyfriend Kyle (Freddie Stroma) and their friends are planning to enjoy themselves at April’s parents cabin. Kyle has a surprise for his longtime girlfriend and he wants his friends there to share the moment. April is just trying to deal with her parent’s divorce. Things are pretty normal until they witness a UFO crash into the woods and they soon discover whatever was on that craft is not friendly.
“Extraterrestrial” is pretty paint-by-numbers, for the most part, but some clever writing in the final act elevates the material a bit. The inclusion of Michael Ironside as a pot-farming neighbor is definitely a plus. I love the retro feel of the film and the classic alien design, which works well here. “Extraterrestrial” isn’t perfect but it’s an entertaining way to spend 100 minutes.
