Beyond the Sky: Blu-Ray Review
Director Fulvio Sestito makes his feature debut with the alien abduction film, “Beyond the Sky”, starring Ryan Carnes (TV’s “General Hospital”) and Jordan Hinson (TV’s “Eureka”). Over the past decade I have had my fill of features centered on documentary filmmakers or reality television producers trying to uncover aliens or haunted houses. I just feel like that sub-genre has been done to death and even when something like “Beyond the Sky” comes around (which isn’t bad) it winds up hard being compelled by the story that unfolds. Having said that, if you like the documentary-style sci-fi flicks, you might be entertained with this one.
The story centers on documentarian Chris Norton (Carnes) and his producer Brent (Claude Duhamel) who are set out to disprove the alien abduction phenomenon. When the pair meet Emily Reed (Hinson) and listen to her story, they begin to believe there is something strange going on, even if Chris is not-quite-convinced about aliens existing. What catches Chris’ attention is that Emily claims to be abducted every seven years on her birthday. The reason for his interest is that something strange happened to him on his seventh birthday as well. The deeper they investigate the abductions, the more information comes to light that makes Chris question what is true?
“Beyond the Sky” runs just over 80 minutes and Sestito does a good job keeping the story moving along at a brisk pace. I may not have been all-that-into the film, but I wasn’t bored either. I also really Hinson’s character, Emily. She is a big part of what make the film work for me. Carnes is fine as Chris, but it is Hinson that stands out. As I mentioned before, if you are a fan of this sub-genre, you may want to give “Beyond the Sky” a look.
