Bloodsucking Bastards: Blu-Ray Review
Arriving this week on Blu-ray is the vampire office comedy “Bloodsucking Bastards”, directed by Brian James O’Conell and written by the Los Angeles based comedy group, Dr. God. The film stars Fran Kranz whom I loved in “Cabin in the Woods”, “Much Ado About Nothing” and TV’s “Dollhouse”. Being a fan of horror-comedy, vampire films and Kranz, I was definitely sold on “Bloodsucking Bastards”. How could I not be, when it was being described as “Office Space” meets “Shaun of the Dead”? Unfortunately “Bloodsucking Bastards” just isn’t all that funny.
Evan (Kranz) is not having a good day. His girlfriend Amanda (Emma Fitzpatrick) has broken up with him and he has just been passed over for a promotion. It gets worse. The job he was hoping for was given to Max (Pedro Pascal) who was a rival of Evan’s in college. Even isn’t completely alone though. He still has his friends Tim (Joey Kern) and Andrew (Justin Ware). Just when Evan thinks things can’t get any worse, they do! It turns out that Max is turning a select group of employees into vampires. The ones not being turned, are being killed. Now it’s up to Evan and the energy drink addicted security guard to save the day.
There are a couple sporadic laughs in “Bloodsucking Bastards” but with the obvious talent involved in front of the camera and with the writers, the whole thing is barely entertaining. It’s not terrible, but it just lacks bite.
