Burying the Ex: Blu-Ray Review
Arriving this week on DVD and Blu-ray is the zombie-rom-com “Burying the Ex”, which stars Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene, Alexandra Daddario, Oliver Cooper and directed by Joe Dante (“The Howling”, “Gremlins”). Like many 80’s kids, I grew up on the films helmed by Dante so I went into this one with an open mind. Although not great, “Burying the Ex” is thoroughly entertaining.
When Max (Yelchin) realizes that his relationship with Evelyn (Greene) isn’t working out, his half-brother Travis (Cooper) suggests that Max breaks up with her in a public place. That plan takes a bad turn when Evelyn is killed on the way to meet Max. After some grieving the loss of his almost-ex-girlfriend, Max finds some happiness hanging out with Olivia (Daddario) a beautiful young woman who shares his passion for classic horror films.
Things are looking brighter for Max until Evelyn digs herself out of the grave and comes back home, to fulfill her wish of being with Max forever. To make matters even worse, Evelyn isn’t the shining beauty she ones was, as her body begins to decay and her controlling and manipulative ways have increased to insane levels.
What makes “Burying the Ex” so likable is the chemistry between Yelchin and Daddario. The biggest problems here are Cooper as the idiot half-brother who is just plain annoying and Greene who’s over-the-top Evelyn wears thin after awhile. I feel the film works best when forcused on Max and Olivia and I think an intelligent romantic-comedy about horror fans finding love would have made for more interesting story. Regardless, “Burying the Ex” is worth checking out, especially if you are a fan of Joe Dante.
