Close Range: Blu-Ray Review

close range

Arriving this week on DVD and Blu-ray is the action flick “Close Range” which reunites star Scott Atkins with “Undisputed 2 and 3” director Isaac Florentine. I am a fan of the two direct-to-video “Undisputed” sequels so I was looking forward to “Close Range”, which also features Nick Chinlund who I can always count on as a solid bad guy (“Con Air”, “Training Day”, “The Chronicles of Riddick”). Aside from a pretty solid opening sequence in which Adkins’ character Colton MacReady rescues his niece Hailey (Madison Lawlor) from a Mexican drug cartel, the rest of “Close Range” is just way too generic.

While freeing his niece, Colton killed a whole lot of bad guys, this included the son of kingpin Fernando Garcia (Tony Perez). Not only does Garcia want revenge, but he also wants his flash dive back which contains sensitive information. Colton unknowingly took it during the rescue. Now Colton must protect his sister Angela (Caitlin Keats) and his niece from not only the Mexican cartel, but also the very dirty Sheriff Jasper Calloway (Chinlund).

“Close Range” has plenty of action but it’s not much fun. Adkins fans might find it to be serviceable enough for some mindless entertainment, but I much rather go back and watch “Undisputed 2” again.
