Corpse Bride: 4K UHD Review

Corpse Bride: 4K UHD Review

Just in time for its 20th anniversary, Warner Bros. is bringing Tim Burton’s stop-motion classic Corpse Bride to 4K UHD for the very first time. Co-directed by Mike Johnson and written by John August, Caroline Thompson, and Pamela Pettler, this film marked Burton’s first stop-motion feature as a director after producing The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach. While Nightmare often gets the most attention, Corpse Bride has always held a special place in my heart.

The story follows Victor Van Dort (voiced by Johnny Depp), a shy and clumsy son of successful fish merchants, who is arranged to marry Victoria Everglot (voiced by Emily Watson). Victoria is the sweet but neglected daughter of aristocrats desperate to restore their family fortune through the union. Despite their initial nerves, Victor and Victoria quickly fall for each other—until Victor’s stage fright ruins the wedding rehearsal, sending him fleeing into the woods.

Alone in the forest, Victor rehearses his vows and places a wedding ring on what he believes is a tree root. To his horror, it’s actually the skeletal finger of Emily (voiced by Helena Bonham Carter), a long-dead bride who rises from the grave and joyfully accepts his proposal. Transported to the Land of the Dead, Victor discovers a vibrant world full of quirky, lively spirits—and even reunites with his beloved childhood dog. As Emily’s tragic backstory unfolds, Victor becomes desperate to return to the living world and be with Victoria. But complications arise when Victoria is forced into marriage with Barkis Bittern (Richard E. Grant), a scheming conman after her family’s fortune.

Though it never quite developed the cult following of The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride remains one of Burton’s most visually stunning and emotionally resonant works. The new 4K UHD release breathes fresh life into the film, boasting a sharp 2160p presentation with HDR. While Burton’s tale is dark and moody, the enhanced transfer reveals vibrant splashes of color—especially in the Land of the Dead—while delivering deep, rich blacks. The accompanying Dolby Atmos track is equally impressive, showcasing Danny Elfman’s enchanting score with immersive clarity.

With Halloween just around the corner, this new release is the perfect way to revisit Burton’s gothic fairy tale. Corpse Bride is a hauntingly beautiful film for the whole family, and this 20th anniversary edition is its finest presentation yet.
