Devil’s Gate: Blu-Ray Review

Arriving on Blu-ray and DVD combo this week is the sci-fi horror film, “Devil’s Pass”, starring Milo Ventimiglia (“This is Us”), Amanda Schull (“12 Monkeys”), Bridget Regan (“The Last Ship”), and Shawn Ashmore (“X-Men”).  “Devil’s Pass” marks the directorial debut for Clay Staub who was a second unit director on the “Dawn of the Dead” remake and “The Thing” prequel.

The story takes place at an isolated farmhouse in Devil’s Gate, where FBI Agent Daria Francis (Schull) and local deputy Conrad ‘Colt’ Slater (Ashmore) question Jackson Pritchard (Ventimiglia) about the disappearance of his missing wife and child. From the start, it seems that Jackson may be responsible for his missing family, but when Agent Francis discovers a strange being locked up in the basement, she soon realizes things may not be what they seem.  After a freak lightning storm, Jackson’s wife Maria (Regan) appears lying naked in the field. That is when Francis and Cult start to realize that Jackson may not be crazy after all.

Aside from some budgeted CGI which more-often-than-not, takes me out of the film, “Devil’s Pass” is a highly entertaining piece of sci-fi that sports a more-than-capable cast.  The film is well paced and feels familiar and fresh at the same time. “Star Trek: The Next Generation” fans will enjoy seeing Jonathan Frakes on screen, for his brief appearance.  If you are looking for a solid piece of science fiction, don’t pass on “Devil’s Pass”.
