Gravy: Blu-Ray Review

Arriving this week on Blu-ray is the horror-comedy “Gravy” co-written and directed by James Roday (Psych) courtesy of Scream Factory. Those of you who believe that cannibal films lately have lacked humor and fun (The Green Inferno) might get a kick out of “Gravy”. Although the film never lives up to the hilarious opening scene with Sarah Silverman, I have to give credit to Roday for serving up something fresh (pun intended).

Set in a small Mexican eatery, three cannibals get together for their annual Halloween feast. On the menu for tonight, is the restaurant staff and security. Anson (Michael Weston), Stef (Jimmi Simpson), and Mimi (Lily Cole) have a wide selection of meats to chose from this night. Winketta (Gabourey Sidibe) is the loud mouth security guard, Chuy (Paul Rodriguez) is the owner, there is also the Mexican cooking French chef Yannick (Lothaire Bluteau) who has been tasked with baking, roasting, grilling and sautéing his co-workers in exchange for having his life spared.

“Gravy” is pretty amusing although not very good. It is Simpson and Weston that keep things entertaining as they play with their victims. Although Cole was the female tormentor, I felt she could have done a bit more with the role. “Gravy” is definitely not for everyone, as it’s an acquired taste.
