Even if you are a fan of the television series “Big Bang Theory”, I am sure you wouldn’t want Jim Parsons front and center as Sheldon Cooper through a whole episode. Now imagine listening to his voice for about 90 minutes straight. It is enough to drive someone mad. That is what sitting through the new animated film “Home” is like. Parsons annoying voice is only part of the problem with this rarely funny or even mildly amusing family film.

When a race of aliens decide to make Earth their new home, they relocate all the humans to various parts of the planet. There is one human left in one of the major cities, a young girl named Tip (voiced by Rihanna). Tip was separated from her mother (voiced by Jennifer Lopez) who was relocated by the aliens. Aside from her pet cat named Pig, Tip has nobody.

Things change when Tip meets Oh (voiced by Parsons), one of the aliens who is actually wanted by his race for accidently sending out a message that will let their enemies know where they are. The two go on a mission to help Tip locate her mother, while Oh attempts not to be caught.

I would be lying if I said that little ones wouldn’t enjoy “Home”, but kids over the age of seven (I am being generous) will probably find themselves bored. So will most parents. Dreamworks is capable of putting out great family animation like the “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Kung-Fu Panda” series. Those films are just as pleasing to adults as they are children. Isn’t pleasing various age groups at the same time a better business model? Or is it just easier to rush out crap like this knowing that parents will bring their kids to it?
