#Horror: Movie Review

Arriving on Blu-ray this week is IFC Midnight’s “#Horror”, courtesy of Scream Factory.  This social-media horror flick is the directorial debut from fashion designer Tara Subkoff, which explains why it is it filled with so much style but lacks in almost everything else.  The house in which most of the movie takes place is absolutely beautiful and the winter snow setting just makes it all the more beautiful. Unfortunately the main characters consist of spoiled, bratty, rich girls who enjoy nothing more than candy crush and bullying each other.

When a group of pre-teens get together for a sleepover, what is supposed to be a night of fun turns into terror when someone begins picking them off, one by one.  Not only that, but the invader is using social media to bring an online audience for the murders.   Normally I am not a fan of children being killed in films but these girls are so awful that I found it hard to feel bad for any of them.  That was probably the intention.

The cast is fine, and the girls do a great job making their characters totally unlikable, but it is Timothy Hutton who stands out here.  He plays the father of one of the girls and when she goes missing after being kicked out of the house, he has a fantastic scene confronting the mean girls.  Too bad the rest of the movie couldn’t be as good.
