Jack’s Back: Blu-Ray Review
Arriving this week on Blu-ray is 1988’s “Jack’s Back”, which stars James Spader, Cynthia Gibb, and written/ directed by Rowdy Herrington (“Road House”). Scream Factory has delivered a new high-definition transfer from the original negative, which means that the Blu-ray looks terrific.
100 years after Jack the Ripper terrorized London, a maniac is killing prostitutes in Los Angeles in the exact same way the Ripper did. Although “Jack’s Back” isn’t very good, James Spader makes it quite fun to watch. We get to see Spader play twin brothers John and Rick Wesford and the two couldn’t be any more different. John is a doctor who spends all his time trying to help the less fortunate. Rick works in a mall shoe store and has a sorted past. Although the siblings haven’t been close in years, Rick looks for answers after his brother turns up dead. By mid-way through “Jack’s Back”, it is pretty easy to figure out who the Jack the Ripper copycat is.
Cynthia Gibb is just as adorable as I remembered from her roles in films like “Short Circuit 2” . Robert Picardo is unintentionally/ intentionally??? hilarious as Dr. Carlos Batera, who assists the police. If you are a fan of “Jack’s Back” , then this release is for you. It’s a great transfer and includes solid bonus features.
