Miss You Already: Movie Review
Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette co-star in the ultra-sad story of lifelong best friends who are put to the test when one is struck with cancer as the other is starting a family. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Thirteen), “Miss You Already” succeeds mostly due to the strong casting, especially Collette who is absolutely fantastic, even if her character can be very unlikable at times.
Jess (Barrymore) and Milly (Collette) have been best friends since childhood. The bond they share is so tight that Jess is considered the Aunt of Milly’s children. Even Milly’s husband Kit (Dominic Cooper) becomes good friends with Jess’s other half Jango (Paddy Considine), It is like one big happy extended family.
As Jess and Jago begin to try and start a family of their own, Milly is diagnosed with a form of breast cancer and must undergo chemo therapy. Like the best friend that she is, Jess drops everything to be there for Milly and even after it looked like the treatment worked, Milly still has to have a mastectomy.
We know going into “Miss You Already” that things aren’t going to get better for Milly, the film’s title basically gives that away. However the journey that the two friends and their loved ones go through is heartbreaking. Be prepared to shed some tears in this one. Although it does lag in stretches, “Miss You Already” is quite good and worth checking out.
