Nighthawks (Collector’s Edition): Blu-Ray Review
What is it about 1981? I grew up a Stallone fan, but for some reason the only two post-Rocky films starring the actor I had never seen were the two that came out in 1981, “Victory” and “Nighthawks”. I had heard good things about both but just never got around to seeing them. Thankfully, arriving this week on Collector’s Edition Blu-ray is “Nighthawks”, courtesy of Shout Select.
Sgt. Deke DaSilva (Sylvester Stallone) and Sgt. Matthew Fox (Billy Dee Williams) are two of New York’s best undercover cops. When the international terrorist known as Wulfgar (Rutger Hauer) makes his way to Manhattan the pair of elite cops are assigned to take him down. Because DaSilva and Fox mostly have experience with street crimes, their military background is the main reason they were chosen. They also must learn about their target and who better to teach them than the man who has been hunting Wulfgar for years, Peter Hartman (Nigel Davenport).
“Nighthawks” was pretty much what I expected and that is a good thing. I love a good 70s-80’s era crime-thriller and director Bruce Malmuth (“Hard to Kill”) does a pretty solid job here. Hauer is effectively creepy and Stallone as the tough New York cop on the hunt is just right. This Collector’s Edition is filled with new bonus features. I do wish they included an interview with either Stallone or Hauer, but fans of the film should definitely be happy which the extra content.
